Math 226 (Modern Algebra II) / Lecture

In the early 1800s, Abel showed that a general equation of degree at least 5 cannot be solved by extracting roots. Today, group theory, developed by Galois to determine which equations are solvable, is used throughout mathematics, and in much of physics and chemistry. This course focuses on groups and Galois theory. Other possible topics include canonical forms of matrices and modules. Prerequisite: Math 225.
