15847. Capt. John Briggs. Born in Dec 1644 in Scituate, MA.47 John died on 22 Mar 1687 in Boston, MA.73
John, was captain of a company in King Philip’s War, of which his brother James was lieutenant and his brother Cornelius was ensign. In 1686 he was a captain under Sir Edmund Andros, Governor of ‘the Dominion of New England.’ He was Constable of Scituate, 3 June 1668; Juror 1678; member of the ‘Grand Enquest’ 1678, 1682, and 1684. He later moved to Boston.47
ca 1683 John married Deborah Hawke (6596) , daughter of Matthew Hawke (2689) (ca 1610-11 Dec 1684) & Margaret [Hawke] (-18 Mar 1684).47 Born ca 1651 in Hingham, MA. Deborah was baptized in Hingham, MA, on 22 Mar 1651/2.50 Deborah died on 15 May 1711 in Scituate, MA.73

“James resided at Conihassett on a part of his father’s farm, which part, with the house standing upon it, was conveyed by gift to him by his parents in 1673, a few days before his marriage. It is thought that the house mentioned in the deed of gift was that named in the deed from Timothy Hatherly in 1651 to Walter Briggs, who built a nwe house upon the farm.”47
He served in King Philip’s war as a lieutenant. He was surveyor of highways, constable 1676, and selectman 1689.47
On 8 Jul 1673 James married Rebecca Tilden (5599) , daughter of Dea. Joseph Tilden (2178) (ca Apr 1615-3 Jun 1670) & Alice Twisden (ca Mar 1633-aft 1694), in Scituate, MA.73 Born in Feb 1654 in Scituate, MA.66 Rebecca died on 1 Apr 1740 in Scituate, MA.73

15849. Ens. Cornelius Briggs. Born in 1647 in Scituate, MA.73 Cornelius died on 20 Oct 1694 in Scituate, MA.73 Occupation: boatman.47
Cornelius “was an Ensign in Philip's war, with his two brothers who were his superior officers. "56 He also served in the war against the French and Indians in 1693 as Captain of a company in an ‘Expedition to the Eastward.’47
Capt. Cornelius Briggs was a large landholder in Swanzey and vicinity.47
After his second marriage, Cornelius continued to live for a time in the Russell house in Scituate, where his son James was born, and later removed to Barnstable, where the rest of his children were probably born. He sold the Russell house in 1688 to David Jacob. He was admitted a freeman in Barnstable in 1689. Before 1693 he removed back to Scituate.47
On 20 Mar 1677 Cornelius first married Mary Doughty (9128) , daughter of James Doughty (ca 1624-) & Lydia Turner (3264) (ca 1630-), in Scituate, MA.90 “Cornelious briggs and mary Russell widdow both of Scittuate was marryed ye 20th of march 1677”. Born on 23 Jun 1650 in Scituate, MA.73 Mary died in 1680/83.47
Mary, first married Samuel Russell, second Cornelius Briggs. Samuel was one of Cornelius’s fellow soldiers who had fallen the year before Cornelius married Samuel’s widow Mary.27
Mary inherited the Russell house at Greenbush and continuted to reside in it after her marriage to Cornelius.47

On 6 May 1683 Cornelius second married Mehitable Allyn (6940) , daughter of Thomas Allyn (2747) (ca 1597-between 28 Feb 1675 and 5 Mar 1680) & Winifred [Crawford] (-bef 28 Feb 1675), in Barnstable, MA.163 Born ca 1648 in Barnstable, MA. Mehitable was baptized in Barnstable, MA, on 28 Aug 1648.47
Mehitable first married Samuel Allyn, second Cornelius Briggs.

ca 1675 Hannah first married Samuel Winslow (3594) , son of John Winslow (1873) (ca 1597-bet 12 Mar 1673/4 and 21 May 1674) & Mary Chilton (1445) (ca 1607-bet 31 Jul 1676 and 1 May 1679). Born ca 1649 in Plymouth, MA. Samuel died on 14 Oct 1680 in Boston, MA.292 Occupation: mariner.
Samuel was of Careswell, Marshfield, when he married in 1675.47

Hannah second married Capt. Thomas Jolls. Thomas died ca 1687 in Boston, MA.
15851. Joseph Briggs. Born ca 1652 in Scituate, MA.47 Joseph died bef 1684.
L. Vernon Briggs47 conjectures that Joseph lost his life in one of the expeditioins against the Narragansetts, perhaps about 1675, and probably before his father died in 1684.47
