The Otis Family Records223 gives the date of Josiah’s death as “23 Mar 1723, aged 17 months” which is inconsistent with his birth date.

24418. Dr. Isaac Otis. Born on 1 Sep 1719 in Scituate, MA.116 At the age of 4, Isaac was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 17 May 1724.116 Isaac died in East Bridgewater, MA, on 9 Dec 1787; he was 68.223 Occupation: physician. Education: Harvard 1738.

Issac practiced medicine in East Bridgewater, MA. He served a short time in the Revolutionary War as surgeon in Col. Edward Mitchell’s regiment.223 In 1762 his name appears on a List of Officerss commissioned for the 2d Regiment of Militia in the County of Plymouth, with rank of Captain of 7th Bridgewater Company, Col. Thomas Clapp’s Regiment. In the Revolution he appears with rank of Surgeon on Muster and Pay Roll of Col. Mitchell’s Regiment, for service on alarm at Bristol, RI, 8 Dec 1776. Time of service, 16 days.7

On 30 Jun 1746 when Isaac was 26, he married Mehitable Bass (37276) , daughter of Capt. Jonathan Bass (35038) (ca 1697-17 May 1750) & Susanna Byram (ca 1694-19 Sep 1783), in Bridgewater, MA.223 Born on 21 Apr 1728 in Bridgewater, MA.223 Mehitable died in East Bridgewater, MA, on 15 Mar 1800; she was 71.223

Dr. Otis was the third physician of Scituate, and commenced practice about 1760. He was in the French War and served as surgeon’s mate at Crown point in 1758, in Colonel Bayley’s regiment. In 1774 he was on a committee appointed by the town, which reported that ‘the arbitrary measures of the British Pariament are subversive of those rights and liberties which our fathers have handed down to us.’ He was also one of the Scituate Committee of Inspection, who reported all who were inimical to the Continental Association.223

James and Lucy lived in the Isaac Otis house beside Stony Cove Brook. He began to practice medicine about 1760, after having been in 1756 a Surgeon’s Mate in the French War.7

He was in the Revolutionary War and a surgeon both on board the sloop of war Ranger and with the American forces at Ticonderoga.

On 3 Oct 1761 (int) when James was 27, he married Lucy Cushing (24272) , daughter of Col. Ezekiel Cushing (12025) (27 Apr 1698-7 May 1765) & Hannah Doane (12627) (1 Dec 1703-7 Jun 1742), in Scituate, MA.116 Born on 27 Dec 1735 in Provincetown, MA.48 Lucy died in Scituate, MA, on 24 Jun 1816; she was 80.116 Buried in South Parish Cem. Norwell.
